The Prevalence Rate of Increased Smoking in the Category of Children in Indonesia: Price Effects and Peer Effects

Jakarta, 27 August 2020 – Today, the Center for Social Security Studies, University of Indonesia (PKJS-UI) launched a study on the Effects of Cigarette Prices and Peer Effects on Smoking Prevalence Rates in Children in Indonesia. Based on the analysis, the prevalence of smoking in children and adolescents in Indonesia (7-18 years) based on the 2015 Susenas is 2.7%. Based on age groups, the highest prevalence is at the age of 16-18 years, but not a few of the children aged 7-12 years have also smoked. Based on the estimation of researchers using Susenas data, the total number of smokers of children and adolescents in Indonesia reaches 1.5 million people. The smoking prevalence of children from IFLS is relatively higher due to differences in coverage and definition of IFLS samples. In addition, the PKJS-UI study also shows:
